LOL: Last One Laughing – Australia Review

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I don’t know what it is (well actually I know exactly what it is – it’s Sam Simmons) about the show that appealed to me so much, I think maybe the particular in your face brand of silliness and just the comedy of creative insanity, but this show had me hooked! I’d never heard of it before, even though it turns out that versions have been filmed in 8 countries (including Australia), with this one having aired in 2000 and being a Prime exclusive. I watched the first episode last night then couldn’t switch off for the entire 6 episode season. Anything which gets you to binge solidly for almost 3 hours surely has to deserve 5 stars right?

The format of the show is quite simple – it starts with 10 of Australias top comedian (I’ll put the list below) and they are stuck in a room for 6 hours. In that room they have a little pre area out of the way where they can keep props, and then they have a main room which is made up of a table surrounded by chairs, some sofas and a bar / snack area. During these 6 hours they are not allowed to laugh, snigger or even crack a smile because of what someone says or does. If they do they get a yellow card, and should they do it a second time they will get eliminated. Last one left at the end wins $100,000 Aus. Not included in the list of comedians is comedy actress Rebel Wilson who is the host. She doesn’t provide too much direct comedy content but shes essentially the referee and just seeing her laugh at stuff back stage makes it worth having her there too. The comedians who took part are:

  • Anne Edmonds
  • Becky Lucas
  • Dilruk Jayasinha
  • Ed Kavalee
  • Joel Creasey
  • Frank Woodley
  • Nazeem Hussain
  • Nick Cody
  • Sam Simmons
  • Susie Youssef

For the whole show they do need to continue to take part and make an active contribution to the show, so they can’t just sit in the corner to avoid seeing people. There is one little extra feature which means that people can’t avoid seeing you. The Joker card! This essentially gives you a 3 minute stand up set which everyone has to sit down and watch.

I don’t want to give any spoilers so all I will say is that I absolutely love Sam Simmons. I liked him before, but after this I think he’s just absolute comedy gold, and his joker set would have had me kicked out of that room in a heartbeat.

During the show you get all kinds of humor from bad dad jokes and blurting out random obscenities to dick jokes and fart jokes and all the way to physical and slapstick comedy. There’s something funny for just about everyone in this show, but be warned if you’re not a fan of silly humor, this show gets more and more crazy as it continues to descent in to pure madness!

I desperately want to see more of this show and hope they make an American and British version as I am sure they would be out of this world.

Speaking of a British and American one, who would you want to see in the room if they ever made one for each of those? I know it has absolutely nothing to do with this review but here are my lists for each:

British version wish list:

  1. Jimmy Carr
  2. Frankie Boyle
  3. Jack Whitehall
  4. Noel Fielding
  5. Jo Brand
  6. Nish Kumar
  7. James Acaster
  8. Greg Davies
  9. Richard Ayoade
  10. Roisin Conaty

WOW – trying to bring that down to 10 people was hard work! Until you try that, you don’t realise just how blessed we are with comedians in the UK.

American version wish list:

  1. Dave Chappelle
  2. Sarah Silverman
  3. Bert Kreischer
  4. Joey Diaz
  5. Carrot Top
  6. Ari Shaffir
  7. Tom Green
  8. Nikki Glaser
  9. Jeff Ross
  10. Ms Pat

Again, a pretty hard list to put together, but I’d say not quite as hard as the british one which surprises me! Certainly the Americans do comedy films and sit coms far better than the Brits, but I think we might just have them on stand up – I am of course assuming that Kevin hart wouldn’t take part in a show like this so i didn’t include him.
