This is a bit of a weird one to give a star rating for because… it’s just so short – how many stars can it possibly get when each episode of this Disney shorts mini series only has about a minute or so of actual watchable material – the intro and credits probably take up about as much time as the actual thing you might want to watch. On the other hand, it’s really aimed at kids (with a 6+ rating for some reason) and my son can watch it over and over and over and over again! In that regard, it’s an absolute hit and he’d probably give it 10 stars out of 5!
There are just 5 episodes and if you skip the credits I reckon you can sit through the whole thing on the toilet with plenty of time to spare before your feet start to get numb… I would have thought though that they will bring out more series!
So the 5 episodes they have each condense an entire Disney movie, fairly accurately in to a minute to 90 seconds or so, and the ones they’ve tackled this time are; the Little Mermaid, Moana, the Lion King, Aladdin and Tangled. With the exception of Lion King, I have to say that they really do sum up the films pretty well in this condensed format. The Lion King one spent about half of it talking about what happens to Mufassa and then doesn’t really have time to fill in the gaps.
I think my favorite one has to be their version of tangled though! Purely because Olaf does an impression of Flynn’s smolder and he looks and sounds just like Butthead of Beavis and Butthead fame when doing so!
When it comes down to it, this is a mini-series that isn’t going to convince people that they need to get the Disney+ subscription, but it’s certainly something quick and fun to stick on a phone or the tv to entertain the kids between meals or whatever and that’s all it needs to be – it’s just one of those little things Dinsey slips into the Disney+ roster from time to time to sweeten that deal a little. We all know how much kids love Olaf so this was always a winner!
I was actually quite looking forward to this myself and I think this is where it falls down slightly with the star rating. In the second Frozen movie when he sums up the story so far to the Northuldra people, that is by far the best scene of the 2 movies, it’s SO funny… This mini-series had the potential to do the same and I think they missed the mark a little – it’s just not as well executed as that scene. I do wonder whether they could have done it so that Olaf is summing up all the films to Captain Matthias so that we got his reaction as that’s what made the scene even better in Frozen II.
Each episode centers mostly on Olaf although he does have Sven, Marshmallow and some of the little snot snow balls from Frozen Fever to help him out.
So in closing, a good bit of fun, especially for kids but certainly just as a perk to the Disney+ subscription than anything else.
