Star Wars Vintage: The Story of the Faithful Wookiee Review

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

What on earth is this!?!?!?!

On Disney Plus they just added a new little section to the Star Wars area which is a set of vintage Star Wars videos, including this little animation. It’s called the Story of the Faithful Wookiee and was actually a part of the old Star Wars holiday special which no one likes to talk about from 1978. It is however also readily available on YouTube – presumably because the whole holiday special never had any major reruns or an official release so there are bootlegs of parts of it all over the place!

Yep… It really was so bad that Lucas seems to have wished that it would just disappear.

In the holiday special, Lumpawarrump, the son of Chewie is waiting for his dad to come home and he’s watching tv, at which point this short animation comes on. It’s only 9 minutes long, but of course just makes up a small portion of that original made for tv movie.

The short film itself is nothing special to be honest and it does little to add to the overall Star Wars universe. It does show the first interaction between Han Solo, Luke and Chewie with Boba Fett who tries to help them get medication to reverse a sleeping sickness, but are his intentions what they seem to be? After all fans of Star Wars will know that Boba Fett isn’t known for going out of his way to help strangers for absolutely no reason what so ever! But never the less it’s a little bit of fun and certainly fills a few minutes.

If it was just that, then besides the fact that the animation was pretty good for the 70’s, I’d probably give it just a couple of stars… As I said it really doesn’t add much to the franchise, and that 2 is even considering that all the characters portrayed are voiced by the actual actors (which essentially never happens with Star Wars animations).

But if you want to have some fun then this short is definitely for you, and I actually feel a bit bad for making it drop half a star. This is definitely something you can have fun with and I rate my reviews by how much I enjoyed it… sue me!

The animation looks like the animators were tripping balls on acid… BADLY!

Han Solo is absolutely incredible! They make Harrison Ford look like you’ve always wanted him to look – his face definitely matches his personality in this thing. C3PO looks like he’s dropped some pills and R2 for some reason is made from jelly, and I’m not even going to touch on the color schemes and sea monsters.

There’s something seriously wrong if you can’t as a Star Wars fan sit down and have a 9 minute riot with this thing… enjoy!
