I want to start by just giving the absolute initial thought that popped in to my head when I saw the first teaser for the first time!
That was it… nothing more, nothing less – we start by seeing Kong first, and I have to say, he looks absolutely incredible! I think that out of all the Kongs who have come before this one, he absolutely looks the best. I do have to admit that before seeing the teaser and just seeing the thumbnail pop up I though the effigy which the girl is holding up to him was meant to be a baby Kong, which would have been awesome!
This Kong: Skull Island / Godzilla: King of the Monsters sequel is pulling these movie monster behemoths together and it’s clear that Kong is captured and this creates the perfect opportunity for Godzilla to get his teeth in to him while he’s on a ship – most likely coming back to the USA, just because that’s where Hollywood always seems to want to take giant monsters.
Warner Bros and Legendary have given us an idea of the film is about from their initial press release back in 2018:
“In a time when monsters walk the Earth, humanity’s fight for its future sets Godzilla and Kong on a collision course that will see the two most powerful forces of nature on the planet collide in a spectacular battle for the ages. As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever.”
We see a few shots in the teasers of the 2 monsters engaged in battle, and I have to say they look like they’re going to be intense battles, and so far they look incredible – but I think that the plot which Warner eluded to above might suggest that they have to put their differences behind them and team up to battle Monarch instead. Even the movie poster states that one will fall… But as they are seen ready to battle across a built up area being occupied by Kong on the poster, I wonder whether the one who will fall will end up being the people getting involved or the city? I’d love to see Kong and Godzilla both make it out of the movie at the end.
It’s nice to see that Kong still has his soft side, and we can already see at least a couple of really cute interactions with a young girl, and it wouldn’t surprise me if that is extended further to the young (I would guess they might be journalists) people who look like they want to film the monsters… They look like either journalists or scientists but to bring the movie in to the current era I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re influencers or youtubers and the gear we can see on the roof of their van is meant to help them get a data signal for streaming.
Who knows… and right now, who cares? It doesn’t look like it’s the most important aspect of the film right now.
Right now it looks like Kong baning on the ship and screaming for Godzilla to bring it from the depths of the ocean look to be the things we need to focus on!
I for one can’t wait for what is still scheduled as a March cinema release, but let’s see how that rolls out around the world as I’m not convinced that British cinemas at least will be open by then. It’s a difficult time for cinemas and film production companies at the moment so I for one am glad to see heavy hitters like this still being made.
