Nerd News: MCM Cancel London, Birmingham, Manchester & Scotland Comic Cons due to COVID-19 Concerns

With the future of large scale events still in the air for the time being, this is some news which whilst incredibly sad to hear about, is not surprising and makes a lot of sense for them to announce. This is a very difficult time for everyone and I do hope that this decision doesn’t have too much of a long term effect on the company who put on some of the best comic con events in the UK.

As it stands they have cancelled all of their events up until August 20202 which covers the MCM Comic Con events in London, Birmingham, Manchester and Scotland.

I must say as well that the way in which they have handled the news, let everyone know what will happen regarding refunds and when people should expect those by has been incredibly professional and admirable. Nice job MCM, hopefully we’ll be returning some time in the future. To explain it best here is the statement which they posted on their website yesterday:

“It is with a heavy heart that we today announce the cancellation of MCM Birmingham Comic Con June, MCM London Comic Con July, MCM Manchester Comic Con, August, and MCM Scotland Comic Con September following the escalation of COVID-19 in the UK, Europe, and globally.

Our aim since the beginning has always been to put on the best events for you as possible, a space for you to gather together, be yourselves, and make memories with those who matter to you most. Unfortunately, after extensive discussions with all the relevant public health, local and national authorities we have taken the difficult decision not to go ahead with the events at this time.

Refunds for ticket holders, pre-paid photo and autographs, exhibitors, retailers and artists will all be automatically processed, with no further action needed on your part. We aim to have all refunds processed before the end of June and we appreciate your continued patience and understanding.

Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by the COVID-19 virus, and to all of you, who look forward to our events year on year as a place of acceptance and safety. Rest assured, we are working hard to make sure that when safe to do so, we will return as a physical event, but until then we have plans to bring you all your comic con needs to the safety of your own homes, so stay tuned over the next few months!

Finally, we would like to say thank you for all the messages that we have received over the past few months. Your feedback has been invaluable in helping us determine next steps, and your patience and support during this challenging and unprecedented time whilst difficult decisions were being made has helped us every step of the way.”
