What is a Funko Pop Figure?

I would say that the first thing to say about Funko Pop figures is that they are probably the best selling and widest ranging pop culture collectible on the market right now… Not just amongst figures but amongst all things pop culture! It’s not just a figure or a product it’s nothing short of being a cultural phenomenon of its own! You cannot enter a country or visit a major store where they don’t seem to sell these things!

What are they though?

They’re a simple concept, and not even an original one at that. There were vinyl toys before Funko pops and there will be more when (if) these ever disappear. They really are simply plastic toys with very limited levels of articulation (it’s usually just the head that moves, and some times that head is actually a bobble head). They measure around 4 inches tall, or there abouts. There are some variations depending on the character, and they do also have special edition ones which might be 6, 10, 18 or even 20 inches tall, but the average one is a 4 inch vinyl toy. They come in a box which usually measures 3.5 inches deep x 4.5 inches wide x 6.25 inches high.

These boxes are what adds to the collectors factor because they are well displayed in a clear plastic sleeve inside this box which has a window display on the front and right hand side. There is then a printed box on the left hand side, back, top and bottom. They really are very well displayed, and many people actually prefer to display them in these boxes rather than outside. They make them easy to stack and display together as they turn these odd shaped and sized figures in to uniform collectibles.

They are generally made from smooth PVC and painted with a high quality and detailed finish, however there are also various variations which are explained in my Funko terminology post, such as flocked or glow in the dark versions. With some figures they will even include a number of rarer variations in the form of a chase version of the figure.

Where can I buy Funko pop figures?

I really did mean it when I said that you can find theses things everywhere now! Even when I have been on holiday or business trips I have seen and purchased these as far afield as Sweden, USA, Netherlands and even the Philippines!

In the UK you can find them at just about any comic book store that wants to actually earn some cash, and stores like HMV, Game, Hawkins Bazaar (who I believe have sadly gone in to administration so don’t know for how much longer we will see those as they have one of the best selections), the Entertainer, Menkind, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, TK Maxx, Primark and Home Bargains to name just a few!

You’ll also find LOADS of them at any comic convention now (there are actually events just for selling them now as well such as the London Pop Market), and I’ve seen at least a couple now at just about any boot fair you take a look around.

Of course you can also find plenty of them online with just a handful of retailers below:

Who are the figures of?

Funko pride themselves on having a lot of franchises which they hold the official licenses for, which means that all of their products are officially endorsed by the owners of those characters. In some cases such as Star Wars the toy figure license actually sits with Hasbro, which is why the Star Wars ones are all bobble heads, as they are now no longer a toy figure to play with.

They have the rights to a huge number of franchises though so you can find figures for franchises such as (and this is a VERY limited list of the huge number they produce):

I could keep going on and on and on… I would say that I haven’t even listed a couple of percent of the licenses which they cater for! When I said earlier that they are probably the leading supplier of pop culture collectibles I wasn’t kidding. If you can’t find at least 1 figure which appeals to something you like, I think you need to check your pulse, because I think you might be dead inside… Just saying!

They don’t just have figures for licenses belonging to other companies, they do have their own original figures too, which are usually really fun figures, but of course a little less known. The most well known of these is the Funko mascot, Freddy Funko.
